Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional
Exam AB-730 • Beginner Level • 45 Minutes • Proctored via Pearson VUE
What Is the AB-730?
The Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional is Microsoft's certification for people who use generative AI and Microsoft 365 Copilot in their work. It validates that someone can use AI tools to improve daily productivity, make better decisions, and create business content, all without writing a line of code.
It's designed for business professionals across every function: operations, HR, finance, marketing, project management, customer service. If your team uses Microsoft 365, this certification proves they can use it intelligently with AI.
The exam became generally available in early 2026 and is already showing up in job specifications and professional development frameworks across the UK.
The Exam at a Glance
The exam is proctored through Pearson VUE, meaning learners take it under supervised conditions (either at a test centre or online with webcam monitoring). It includes a mix of multiple-choice and scenario-based questions, typically 40 to 60 in total.
What the Exam Covers
AB-730 is split into three domains, each weighted to reflect its importance in the exam:
1. Understanding Generative AI Fundamentals
- How Copilot works to keep your organisation's information private and secure
- How context (work files, web data, the app you're using) affects Copilot responses
- The difference between a chat experience and an agent experience
- When and why to create your own Copilot agent
- Common risks: fabrications, prompt injection, and over-reliance on AI output
- Verification steps including citation checks and human review
- How data protection restricts prompt results
2. Managing Prompts and Conversations by Using AI
- Creating effective prompts in Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Selecting appropriate resources to reference in a prompt
- Saving, scheduling, and sharing prompts
- Managing conversations: finding, renaming, deleting chats
- Adding conversations to a notebook
- Creating and configuring Copilot agents (from templates, with knowledge, with instructions)
- Sharing agents with team members
3. Drafting and Analysing Business Content by Using AI
- Creating new documents from prompts
- Generating documents from existing documents
- Creating management summaries
- Moving data and insights between Microsoft 365 apps
- Using Copilot for meetings and collaboration
- Using Copilot Pages for team collaboration
- How Copilot uses memory and instructions
"This isn't a theoretical exam. It tests whether someone can actually use AI in Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint to get real work done. That's exactly what we're teaching on the apprenticeship, so the certification is a natural fit."Rod Doyle, Director, TESS Group
How Your Learners Prepare
The AB-730 is a self-study qualification. Learners prepare using free, publicly available resources from Microsoft, then sit the proctored exam when they're ready. TESS covers the cost of registration.
Self-Study via Microsoft Learn
All preparation materials are available free on Microsoft Learn, including structured learning paths, documentation, and video walkthroughs. Recommended study time is 30 to 40 hours spread over 3 to 4 weeks.
Practise with the Exam Sandbox
Microsoft provides a free exam sandbox that simulates the real test environment. Learners can experience the format, question types, and interface before exam day, building confidence and familiarity.
Sit the Proctored Exam
The 45-minute exam is delivered through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or online with webcam proctoring. TESS covers the registration fee. If a learner doesn't pass first time, they can retake after 24 hours.
Earn the Microsoft Credential
Successful candidates receive the Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional credential, which appears on their Microsoft Learn profile and can be shared on LinkedIn. The certification renews annually through a free online assessment.
Registration Cost Covered
TESS Group covers the exam registration fee for all learners on the AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship (Microsoft edition). Your team members pay nothing to sit this exam.
Why This Matters for Employers
If you're investing in AI apprenticeships, you want proof that the skills are sticking. The AB-730 provides that proof in a way that's independently verified by Microsoft, not just by the training provider.
It also signals something to the wider business. When your team members have a Microsoft certification on their profile, it tells stakeholders, clients, and leadership that your organisation is building genuine AI capability, not just attending workshops.
The certification covers exactly the skills that matter most right now: can your people prompt AI effectively, can they create business documents with it, and do they understand the risks and guardrails? Those are practical, measurable competencies.
"We embedded AB-730 because it validates what we're already teaching. Our learners are using Copilot throughout the programme, building prompts, creating agents, drafting content. The exam just confirms they can do it to Microsoft's standard."Lisa O'Reilly, Director, TESS Group
