What the AI Strategy unit is built to solve

Most senior leaders can list a dozen AI use cases. Far fewer can explain which ones will move the numbers, which risks they carry, and what it will take to pull them off. AI Strategy and Opportunity is the structured programme that turns AI noise into a credible, board-ready strategy.

Before the AI Strategy unit

  • Scattered AI pilots with no organising thesis
  • Business cases that the board bounces back
  • No clear view on competitor or sector moves
  • Strategy lives in a deck, not in the operating plan

After the AI Strategy unit

  • A single AI strategy tied to business outcomes
  • Prioritised AI opportunities with a value case behind each
  • A sector and competitor scan you can update quarterly
  • Stakeholder narratives that get AI funding signed off

Who the AI Strategy apprenticeship is for

Any senior leader who will be asked, "what is our AI strategy?" and is expected to have a real answer.

CEOs & MDs

Set the AI direction for the whole organisation and defend it to the board, investors, and the market.

Directors & Heads of Strategy

Turn AI from a CEO-mandate headline into a sequenced plan with owners, timelines, and measurable value.

Commercial & Transformation Leads

Build credible value cases, spot sector opportunity, and get AI work through investment committees.

What you will cover in AI Strategy and Opportunity

Five learning outcomes, grouped into three practical modules. Each outcome is assessed through work you bring from your own organisation, so the unit pays back while you study.

Module 1

AI landscape & strategic context

What AI can and cannot do for a senior leader in 2026. Sector trajectories, regulatory context, and the decisions that are no longer optional.

  • AI maturity models
  • Sector and competitor scan
  • Regulatory & ethical frame
Module 2

Opportunity identification & value case

How to surface high-value AI opportunities in your own organisation and translate them into business cases that boards actually approve.

  • Opportunity mapping
  • Value case structure
  • Risk and ROI framing
Module 3

Strategy, stakeholders & narrative

Turning a prioritised list of opportunities into a sequenced AI strategy, plus the narrative you need for the board, the workforce, and the market.

  • Strategic sequencing
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Board-ready narrative

Work-integrated by design. You bring a real AI decision you are facing. You leave with a board-ready strategy document, a prioritised opportunity backlog, and a value case for your top AI move.

The AI tools your strategy will be built around

You cannot set AI strategy in the abstract. This unit grounds every decision in the real enterprise AI tools UK boards are actually evaluating, procuring, and deploying, so leaders leave knowing where each tool creates commercial value, where it does not, and how to frame the business case.

Where AI Strategy and Opportunity sits in the pathway

The AI Strategy unit is one of three Level 5 apprenticeship units that together replace the previous AI Leadership unit. Take one, two, or all three, depending on whether you are equipping a single leader, a senior team, or the whole C-suite.

Funding

The AI Strategy unit carries up to £750 of government funding per learner. Neither the learner nor the employer pays the full price of the unit.

Levy payers

If your organisation pays the Apprenticeship Levy, the cost of the AI Strategy unit is drawn from your Growth and Skills Levy pot. No invoice, no separate budget request. This is levy money you have already paid, use it before it expires.

SMEs (non-levy)

Non-levy employers receive 95 to 100% government funding for the AI Strategy unit, depending on size. The remaining contribution, where one applies, is a small employer fee paid to the provider.

Combine AI Strategy with AI Adoption & Governance and AI Delivery & Transformation for up to £2,250 of combined government funding per learner across the full pathway.

For employers: the business case

A senior leader without an AI strategy is a compounding risk. A senior leader with one is a compounding advantage. Here is how HR, L&D, and Finance teams are positioning the AI Strategy unit internally.

01. Investment

Up to £750 per leader, government funded

Levy-payers draw the cost from their Growth and Skills Levy pot. SMEs receive 95 to 100% funding. The commercial comparison is a consultancy day-rate of £2,000 to £4,000 that delivers a single report.

02. Scale

One leader, a senior team, or the full C-suite

Start with a single strategy director, scale to a cross-functional exec team, or combine all three pathway units for up to £2,250 per leader across Strategy, Governance, and Delivery.

03. Time

30+ guided learning hours across 4 to 8 weeks

Built for senior diaries. Structured short sessions, coached between board cycles, with real work products, not assignments that sit in a folder.

04. Validation

Skills test by TESS, validated by the employer

Skills England requires a mandatory skills test delivered by the training provider, with the employer confirming the result. No End-Point Assessment. Far lighter administrative load than a full apprenticeship.

05. Output

A board-ready AI strategy and value case

Every leader finishes with a documented AI strategy, a prioritised opportunity map, and a business case ready for board sign-off. Not a certificate with no commercial artefact behind it.

06. Provider

Ofsted Good, 4.9/5 from 689 reviews

TESS Group is one of the first providers approved for the new Skills England AI Leadership Pathway. 10,000+ learners trained, 59% distinction rate, 97% employer satisfaction.

AI Strategy apprenticeship FAQ

Straight answers for buyers and learners.

What is the AI Strategy and Opportunity unit?

It is a Level 5 apprenticeship unit approved by Skills England for delivery from 28 April 2026. It equips senior leaders to set AI strategy, identify commercial AI opportunity across Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and build credible business cases. Minimum 30 guided learning hours, up to £750 funded per learner.

Who should take the AI Strategy unit?

CEOs, MDs, directors, heads of strategy, and senior leaders who need to decide where AI creates value. No technical or coding background is required.

How long does it take?

Minimum 30 guided learning hours. Typical delivery is 4 to 8 weeks part-time, designed to fit around a senior leader's diary.

Is it fully funded?

Yes. Up to £750 of government funding per learner. SMEs: 95 to 100% funded. Levy payers: drawn from the Growth and Skills Levy. Learners never pay.

Is there an End-Point Assessment?

No. Apprenticeship units do not require a formal EPA. Assessment is through an internal skills test validated by the employer, which completes faster and with less administrative overhead than a full apprenticeship.

How does the AI Strategy unit connect to the Governance and Transformation units?

It is the strategy and opportunity pillar of the three-unit TESS AI Leadership Pathway. It pairs naturally with the AI Adoption, Procurement and Governance unit and the AI Delivery and Organisational Transformation unit. You can take any unit alone or run all three.

Which AI tools will leaders work with?

The unit is tool-agnostic, but leaders explore opportunity framing across the enterprise AI stack UK organisations are actually deploying: Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude for Work, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Google NotebookLM. Focus is where each tool creates commercial value, not running demos.

When is the first cohort?

TESS Group is one of the first approved providers and is accepting expressions of interest now. Delivery begins from 28 April 2026, with rolling starts through the year.

Do I need a technical background?

No. The AI Strategy unit is built for strategic leaders, not technologists. It focuses on spotting AI opportunity, framing value, and aligning stakeholders around an AI direction, not on building models.
