What is the Finance edition of the AI & Automation Level 4 apprenticeship?
It is the same Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner apprenticeship (ST1512) that The TESS Group delivers as its flagship, run as a closed cohort for finance professionals. The twelve modules are unchanged. What changes is every example, exercise and build, which use finance work: reconciliations, invoice processing, month-end close, variance commentary, forecasting and controls. It runs as private cohorts for six or more learners from one organisation, with open cohorts coming soon.
Can we run a private cohort for our finance team?
Yes. Private cohorts run for six or more learners from one organisation, on dates planned around your month-end and year-end, with every build on your own processes and numbers. Fewer than six, or just one person? Register for an open cohort, which takes people from different organisations. Open cohorts are coming soon, and the flagship AI & Automation Level 4 runs open cohorts most months if you want to start sooner.
Is the Finance edition levy-funded?
Yes. It is the ST1512 apprenticeship, so it draws on the Apprenticeship Levy at the £18,000 funding band for levy-paying employers, with no course fee. Non-levy employers pay 5% (£900) for apprentices aged 25 and over, and nothing for apprentices aged 16 to 24. The finance-specific delivery is included at no additional cost.
Do finance people need to code for this apprenticeship?
No. ST1512 is delivered without code throughout. Learners build automations and agents on no-code platforms such as Copilot Studio, Power Automate, Zapier and Make, and work in Excel with Copilot. Most learners on the flagship programme come from non-technical roles, and this edition is built for finance backgrounds specifically.
Can I join if I am ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW qualified, or studying for it?
If you are qualified, yes: a professional accountancy qualification does not rule you out, because this apprenticeship teaches different skills. If you are part-way through another apprenticeship, such as an accountancy apprenticeship, you would need to finish it first, because nobody can be on two funded apprenticeships at once. Studying for an accountancy qualification outside an apprenticeship is fine, and we check eligibility with you before a place is held.
Is there a finance qualification, like the HR and marketing editions have?
One is being written. Using AI in Finance is the working title of a qualification we are developing for finance learners, for accreditation by NCFE, on the same model as Using AI in HR Practice, which NCFE has accredited. We will publish its units and hours once NCFE approves it, and confirm before your cohort starts whether it is available to you. The apprenticeship and the three industry certifications do not depend on it.
How long does the Finance edition take?
Twelve months of delivery covering the twelve modules, followed by a three-month end-point assessment window with NQual, an Ofqual-recognised assessment organisation. Around fifteen months in total. One module a month, with protected off-the-job training time, as on the flagship programme.
Who is the Finance edition for?
Finance assistants, payables and receivables, credit control and purchase ledger, payroll, assistant, management and financial accountants, FP&A analysts, finance business partners, commercial finance, financial controllers, treasury, tax and internal audit, procurement, and heads of finance and finance directors who want hands-on capability rather than a briefing. Your role needs to include improving how work gets done, and we check that with you before a place is held. No technical background is needed.
Is our financial data safe?
The programme is built around that question. Builds use tools your organisation has approved, on data you are allowed to use, and Module 6 covers what may never go into a public AI tool. From Module 5 every build has a named approver and an audit trail, and nothing posts, pays or reaches the board without a person signing it off. Learners evidence their work in a portfolio, anonymised where it needs to be.
How is the apprenticeship assessed?
By NQual, an Ofqual-recognised assessment organisation, through a workplace project (written report, or presentation with questions) and a professional discussion, graded Pass or Distinction. Results come back in an average of five working days. Across all TESS apprenticeships, learners achieve a 72% distinction rate against a UK national average of around 33%, and a 98% EPA pass rate.
How is this different from the Data Analyst Level 4 apprenticeship?
The Data Analyst Level 4 (ST0118) goes deeper on data: cleaning, analysis and visualisation. The Finance edition is about automating and controlling finance processes with AI and no-code tools, and leading their adoption. Some FP&A and reporting specialists want the first. Most finance teams want the second.
