Why an AI tutor changes the maths for L&D buyers

Apprenticeships have a 67% national completion rate. Distinction at end-point assessment is achieved by roughly 20% of apprentices. The two biggest reasons apprentices fall behind are: (a) they get stuck on a concept and don't ask their human coach in time, and (b) they revise from the wrong materials in the run-up to EPA. Both are 11pm problems — problems that don't fit a 9-to-5 coaching schedule.

Coachy is the answer to both for apprentices on the AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4 (ST1512) standard. It's not a replacement for the human skills coach — every apprentice still has a named coach, EPA prep tutor, and gateway reviews. Coachy is the always-on layer underneath: the patient tutor who explains a concept three different ways at midnight, points apprentices at the right KSB, and helps them arrive at their own understanding without giving the answer away.

The three numbers that matter to you as a buyer

59% distinction rate on TESS AI apprenticeships vs ~20% national. 96% 12-month retention. 4.9 / 5 from 689 verified reviews. Coachy isn't the only reason — but it's part of the system that produces those numbers, available to every apprentice from day one.

What Coachy does — and what it deliberately won't do

The hard line we hold by design. Apprentices and employers both deserve to know exactly what they're getting and where the boundaries are.

What Coachy does

Tutor, not ghostwriter

  • Explains concepts in plain English, multiple ways
  • Asks Socratic questions to help the apprentice arrive at the answer themselves
  • Points at the relevant KSB an apprentice is working on
  • Helps practice for EPA observation and discussion
  • Is available 24/7 across mobile and desktop
  • Speaks the ST1512 standard fluently
What Coachy won't do

EPA-safe by design

  • Write portfolio evidence on the apprentice's behalf
  • Generate fabricated examples of workplace activity
  • Replace the named human skills coach
  • Use apprentice conversations to train AI models
  • Pretend to be authoritative outside the ST1512 scope
  • Act as the formal grader of any apprentice work

This matters because end-point assessment is independent: the EPA organisation, not TESS, awards the grade. Anything written by AI on an apprentice's behalf can be flagged at gateway, can fail at EPA, and damages the apprentice's credentials for years afterwards. Coachy is built to make apprentices better at evidencing their own work, not to do the work for them. This is the conversation we want every L&D risk team to have with us before they buy.

How Coachy works

Coachy is a web app at coachy.tessgroup.co.uk, accessible from any modern browser on phone, tablet or laptop. Apprentices type their OneFile email address, receive a magic link in their inbox, click it, and they're in. There's no new account to create, no new password to manage, and nothing for apprentices to learn before they can start using it.

Under the hood, Coachy is built on Claude, Anthropic's current frontier AI model. We chose Claude specifically because it leads peer models on the qualities that matter for tutoring: nuanced explanation, careful reasoning, respecting safety guidelines, and resisting the temptation to give straight answers when a Socratic question is the better teaching move. The system prompt scopes Claude to the AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4 (ST1512) standard, its KSBs, and the TESS pedagogy — so apprentices get an answer that is right for their curriculum, not a generic AI response.

Coachy is included free with every TESS AI apprenticeship enrolment. There is no premium tier, no add-on cost, no per-seat fee. Levy-funded employers and SME co-investment employers both get Coachy as part of the standard package.

Four things that set Coachy apart

Differentiator 01

Built on Claude — not a wrapped older model

Most AI tutors in UK apprenticeships were built on whatever was available 18-24 months ago. Coachy is built on Claude, the current state of the art. Quality of explanation is measurably and demonstrably different — and we're happy to show you side-by-side answer samples in any procurement conversation.

Differentiator 02

EPA-safe pledge — written into the product

Coachy will not write portfolio evidence. No competitor in UK apprenticeships has staked this position publicly. Skills England, IfATE, and EPA organisations reward providers whose tools protect end-point assessment integrity rather than undermining it.

Differentiator 03

OneFile-native sign-on

Apprentices already use OneFile. Coachy authenticates off the same email — no new account, no separate platform to log into. Most competitors ask the apprentice to log into yet another tool. We don't.

Differentiator 04

Anchored to a published outcome

59% distinction vs ~20% national average. Coachy is part of why — alongside up to 5 embedded qualifications, named human skills coaches, and on-time EPA. We publish the outcome stat publicly because we have it; competitors mostly publish process stats because they don't.

Where Coachy fits in the wider TESS support stack

Every TESS AI apprentice has four layers of support. Coachy is one. The others are:

  1. 1:1 expert skills coach. Named human, sector experience, fortnightly minimum cadence. The relationship that drives real progression and EPA readiness.
  2. Coachy AI tutor 24/7. The always-on layer for the questions and concepts apprentices want to work through outside scheduled coaching. Powered by Claude, scoped to ST1512.
  3. OneFile portfolio. Where evidence lives, where coaches review, where progress is logged. Standard across UK apprenticeships.
  4. Cohort + community. Live online sessions, peer apprentices on the same standard, dedicated EPA prep tutors in the run-up to gateway and assessment.

Coachy doesn't replace any of these. It's the connective tissue that makes them all more effective — the human coach gets to focus on the strategic conversations because Coachy already handled the "what does RAG mean" question at 11pm last night.

See Coachy in action

These are real Coachy responses, not marketing copy. Pick a conversation to see how Coachy coaches an apprentice through a question. Notice it never writes the answer for them.

A
Help me understand the 5 Whys for my Module 3 reflection. We had an outage at work yesterday and I want to write it up but I keep stopping at the second "why".
C

Good instinct using the outage as your incident. The point of the second "why" is to push past the obvious failure into the conditions that allowed it. Let's stay with your example.

Why 1: the outage happened. What did your team say caused it on the day?

Once you answer that, we'll do Why 2 properly. The trap I see most often is jumping from "the API timed out" straight to "we need better monitoring", which skips three layers. Tell me your Why 1 first.

Notice: Coachy didn't write the reflection. It held the apprentice in the thinking.

What's coming next

Coachy is in active development. Things we're shipping over the rest of 2026:

  • Persistent sign-in & conversation history — the patterns apprentices know from Claude.ai and ChatGPT. Already prioritised based on direct apprentice feedback.
  • Voice mode — for the apprentice on the commute, walking the warehouse floor, or wanting to practice EPA observation out loud.
  • OneFile portfolio sync — so Coachy knows which KSBs the apprentice has already evidenced and which are outstanding, and can suggest evidence opportunities precisely.
  • Save-as-evidence — turn a reflective conversation into a portfolio entry the coach can review and approve. A feature unique to Coachy.
  • Employer dashboard — cohort engagement, KSB heatmap, EPA readiness traffic-light, all visible to the L&D team responsible for the cohort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TESS Coachy?

Coachy is the AI tutor included with every AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4 (ST1512) apprenticeship at TESS Group. It is purpose-built around that standard and its knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs). Apprentices use Coachy to understand concepts, work through Socratic questions, and prepare for end-point assessment. Coachy is powered by Claude, the current frontier AI model from Anthropic.

What does Coachy do that ChatGPT or generic AI tools don't?

Three things. (1) Coachy is scoped to the ST1512 apprenticeship standard and its KSBs — it speaks the apprentice's curriculum, not the internet. (2) Coachy uses Socratic guidance: it resists giving direct answers, instead helping apprentices arrive at the answer themselves. (3) Coachy is EPA-safe by design — it explains and coaches but does not write portfolio evidence, protecting the integrity of the apprentice's end-point assessment.

Will Coachy write my apprentices' portfolio evidence?

No. This is the line we hold by design. Coachy will explain a concept, help an apprentice work through their thinking, point at relevant KSBs, and ask Socratic questions — but it will not write evidence on the apprentice's behalf. Portfolio evidence has to be the apprentice's own work to pass end-point assessment, and Coachy is built to support that, not undermine it.

How do apprentices sign in to Coachy?

Apprentices sign in using their OneFile email address. They receive a magic link in their inbox; clicking it logs them in. There is no new account, no new password to remember, and no separate platform to learn. Coachy is the same email, the same login, the same workflow apprentices already use for OneFile.

Is Coachy included in the apprenticeship cost?

Yes. Coachy is included with every AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4 (ST1512) apprenticeship at TESS at no additional cost. Levy-funded employers and SME co-investment employers both receive Coachy as part of the standard L4 package — there are no add-on fees, modules, or premium tiers. Coachy is currently L4-only; other levels (L5, L6) are on the Coachy roadmap.

Is Coachy available 24/7?

Yes. Coachy is available any time — including evenings, weekends, and the moments human coaches aren't online. This is by design: apprentices study around their job, and the question they have at 11pm shouldn't have to wait until Monday morning to be answered.

What model powers Coachy?

Coachy is powered by Claude, Anthropic's frontier AI model. Claude is widely regarded as one of the strongest AI models for nuanced explanation, careful reasoning and respecting safety guidelines. Coachy uses a custom system prompt that scopes Claude specifically to the ST1512 standard and the TESS pedagogy.

What about apprentice data and privacy?

Apprentice conversations with Coachy are not used to train AI models. The conversations are stored securely and are accessible to the apprentice and (where appropriate, with their permission) their TESS skills coach. UK data residency, GDPR-compliant data handling, and the same data governance the TESS Group already operates apply to Coachy.

Does Coachy replace the human skills coach?

No, and it never will. Every TESS apprentice still has a named human skills coach for 1:1 coaching, gateway reviews, and EPA preparation. Coachy is there for the questions and concepts apprentices want to work through outside scheduled sessions — making the human coach's time more valuable, not less.

Can employers see how their apprentices are using Coachy?

An employer-facing view is on the Coachy roadmap for late 2026, showing cohort-level engagement, KSB coverage, and EPA readiness signals across the apprentices an employer has enrolled. Today, employer reporting is delivered via the standard TESS account-management cadence and the OneFile portfolio.
