Multiverse alternative for AI apprenticeships: five UK providers compared
Multiverse is the biggest name in UK enterprise apprenticeships. It is not the right fit for every employer, and in 2026 more buyers are asking what else is out there for AI apprenticeships. This is an honest shortlist.
Why employers are looking for a Multiverse alternative in 2026
- The Ofsted report card. Multiverse's 2026 Ofsted report card graded four of its five areas 'needs attention' (it was Outstanding in 2021), and its GOV.UK achievement rate for 2024 to 2025 was 52.6%, against 65.4% nationally. Levy money spent on a programme that does not complete is levy money lost. What the report said.
- ST1512. The Skills England Level 4 AI and Automation Practitioner is the standard most employers mean by "AI apprenticeship". 143 providers deliver it on GOV.UK, Multiverse included (as AI Solutions Builder and AI Transformation Architect), so compare course details and official ratings before you commit.
- Fit. Multiverse is packaged for enterprise buyers. Mid-market employers with a 6 to 20 person cohort, or a single function to upskill, may want a provider set up for private cohorts of that size. The funding band is the same with every provider.
- Who the programme is for. Multiverse built its name on early-careers, degree-alternative hiring. If your goal is upskilling the people you already employ, a provider built for that is usually the better match.
The five alternatives, and who each suits
1. TESS Group
The UK's specialist AI apprenticeship provider. Ofsted Good, Skills England approved, 10,000+ learners trained since 2009 for employers including NHS England, EDF Energy, Transport for London and DPD. Flagship: the Level 4 AI and Automation Practitioner (ST1512), 15 months, no coding, with Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Claude editions, an HR and L&D edition, marketing and finance versions, and funded leadership routes that include CMI Level 3, 5 or 7. Up to five qualifications included on the Level 4 (BCS, Microsoft AB-730 or Google AI Essentials, and NCFE), Coachy AI tutor included, 72% distinction rate at independent EPA (published, with methodology), 4.9/5 from 776 verified reviews. Closed cohorts from six; open cohorts monthly. No apprentice recruitment service. Full TESS vs Multiverse comparison.
2. QA
One of the UK's largest tech training providers, with AI and data apprenticeships at several levels, including the Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner, inside a very broad digital portfolio, strong employer infrastructure and a recruit-an-apprentice service. The safe pick for enterprises consolidating many standards with one supplier, and the closest like-for-like replacement if what you valued at Multiverse was scale and recruitment. TESS vs QA.
3. BPP
A heavyweight in law, accountancy and financial-services apprenticeships, now including the Level 4 AI Automation Specialist on the ST1512 standard. Strongest where AI training must sit next to regulated professional qualifications in one supplier relationship. TESS vs BPP.
4. Corndel
Known for management and data apprenticeships with strong executive-sponsorship models, including collaborations with Imperial College, and Ofsted graded it strong standard in all five areas in February 2026. It delivers the Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner as Automation with AI, and suits employers who want a leadership-development culture with data and AI skills attached. TESS vs Corndel.
5. Cambridge Spark
A data and AI specialist with its own learning platform, EDUKATE.AI, and programmes from Level 3 to 7. Its Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner has two pathways, depending on the tools learners can use at work. TESS vs Cambridge Spark.

How to switch provider without losing funding
- Check the course-level figures for the exact standard, not the brand: achievement rate, employer and apprentice feedback, learner numbers.
- Ask for the outcomes the provider is willing to put in writing: distinction rate, pass rate, and what happens if a learner withdraws.
- Existing apprentices can transfer mid-programme. The new provider takes on the remaining funding and off-the-job hours; the change is recorded in your apprenticeship service account. Ask any shortlisted provider for their transfer process.
- Match the cohort model. If you have six to twenty people, ask for a closed cohort with your own start date; if you have two or three, ask for open-cohort places with named induction dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is TESS Group a Multiverse alternative?
Yes, for employers upskilling existing staff in AI. TESS Group is a UK specialist AI apprenticeship provider, Ofsted Good, delivering the Level 4 AI and Automation Practitioner (ST1512) with monthly start dates, private cohorts from six, up to five qualifications included and a published 72% distinction rate. Multiverse remains the stronger choice for early-careers hiring at enterprise scale.
Why do employers look for a Multiverse alternative in 2026?
Three reasons come up most: Multiverse's 2026 Ofsted report card (four of five areas graded needs attention, down from Outstanding in 2021) and a 52.6% achievement rate on GOV.UK for 2024 to 2025; wanting fixed start dates and extra qualifications included; and wanting a provider set up for private cohorts of 6 to 20 people.
Which Multiverse alternative delivers the ST1512 AI apprenticeship?
All five do, and so does Multiverse: 143 providers are listed for ST1512 on GOV.UK. TESS Group delivers it as its flagship, with Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Claude editions and HR, marketing and finance versions. Check the course-level achievement rate for ST1512 on Find apprenticeship training before shortlisting.
Can we move existing apprentices from Multiverse to another provider?
Yes. Apprentices can transfer provider mid-programme; the new provider takes on the remaining funding and off-the-job hours, and the transfer is recorded through the apprenticeship service. TESS can take on transferring apprentices; ask for the transfer checklist.
Does TESS Group recruit apprentices like Multiverse does?
No. TESS trains employers' existing staff and does not run an apprentice recruitment service. If you need new hires found and placed, QA or Multiverse are the better fit.
