The situation, in one paragraph
If you're reading this, you've probably already had the conversation internally: "What do we do for our first-line managers now that ST0384 is gone?" New starts on Team Leader Level 3 stopped being eligible for funding after 31 December 2025. Your existing apprentices complete as planned. But there's no like-for-like replacement on the standards register — and unless you plug the gap, you lose the pipeline that fed into your supervisory layer.
The practical answer most of our clients land on: step up a level. AI for Team Leaders L4 sits at Level 4 (vs the old L3) but includes CMI Level 3 Management & Leadership as an integrated stretch qualification. Same population — first-line managers, team leaders, supervisors, shift leaders — with AI fluency added.
Curriculum bridge: TL L3 → AI for Team Leaders L4
This is the module-by-module mapping. Green means the content carries across substantively. Red means it's been removed. Yellow means it's new material added because of the AI focus.

Plus: the CMI Level 3 Management & Leadership stretch qualification recovers the management-and-leadership content of TL L3 in formal-credential form. This is included at no extra cost for employers who want it.
Decision tree: who goes onto what
It depends on the role & ambition of the apprentice
What we'll cover on a 20-min transition call
- Where each of your existing apprentices is in their journey — so we can plan a smooth completion and confirm no funding disruption.
- Which level your next cohort should sit at — L3 vs L4 based on the role profile, prior attainment, and management responsibility.
- Levy fit — we'll model the levy drawdown so you know the cost commitment up front. Most TL L3 employers find moving to L4 actually fits their levy better (higher per-learner funding bands).
- Start date — we can mobilise new cohorts within 6–8 weeks of confirmation.
- Reporting continuity — how the new programme reports back into your L&D and HR systems so the transition is clean.
Frequently asked questions
Do my existing TL L3 apprentices need to switch programmes?
No. Apprentices who started ST0384 before 31 December 2025 complete on their existing standard with no change to funding, EPA, or qualification. The defunding only affects new starts.
Is AI for Team Leaders L4 a real apprenticeship standard?
Yes — it's ST1512 AI Data Specialist, applied for the manager population with a TESS-designed pathway. It has full IfATE approval and is funded by the apprenticeship levy at the L4 banding.
What if my team are nervous about "AI" in the name?
Common reaction. The AI content is grounded in the day-to-day tools people already touch (Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Workspace AI, Claude). The leadership content is recognisable management work — it's not a coding apprenticeship. The CMI L3 qualification at the end is the same recognised credential people know from the old programme.
Can we run a hybrid cohort with our existing TL L3 finishers stepping straight into AI for Team Leaders L4?
Yes, and we frequently do this. We design progression cohorts that pick up apprentices the moment they complete ST0384, with prior-learning recognition for any modules that map across.
