The Boiling Frog: small changes stick.

From a live TESS coaching session with trainer Jamie Chambers · captions included

“Are you encouraging people to do one big thing straight away, or empowering them to make small changes over time that add up to success?”

The parable of the boiling frog applied to coaching: gradual, progressive change beats big-bang change, because people barely notice it happening. These clips come from live sessions that feed into the CMI Coaching unit our learners complete.

Have you heard of the parable of the boiling frog before? At no point am I endorsing animal cruelty here; it's a parable. The idea behind it is that if you put a pan of water on to boil and, rather cruelly, throw a frog into it, what's the frog going to do? Jump straight out. However, if you start with a cold pan of water, put a frog in it and turn up the heat so the temperature constantly increases, that frog's not going to notice, and it will eventually boil. Sadly. But that's the parable of the boiling frog.

The point of this is that when change is small, or consistently progressive, people don't notice it as much. Now, why is that important as a coach? Well, as a coach, are you encouraging people to do one big thing straight away, or are you empowering them to make small changes over time that stack up and add up to success?

"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." That's a John F Kennedy quote.
