£ Cost & Funding Explained

AI Apprenticeship Cost UK

Typical funding band sits between GBP 15,000 and GBP 27,000 depending on level. For most UK employers, 100% of that is covered by the DfE Growth & Skills Levy. SMEs pay just 5%. The learner pays nothing.

£ 100% levy-funded for most UK organisations. No cost to your business under the DfE Growth & Skills Levy.
So how much does an AI apprenticeship actually cost? GBP 15,000 to GBP 27,000 is the funding band range across TESS Group's Level 3 to Level 6 AI apprenticeships. The typical Level 4 programme (ST1512 AI & Automation Practitioner) sits at GBP 18,000. That amount is drawn entirely from a levy-paying employer's Digital Account at the Department for Education, so the business sees no out-of-pocket cost. Smaller employers contribute 5% (the government co-invests 95%). The apprentice, earning a salary throughout, pays nothing toward tuition.

Each UK apprenticeship standard is assigned a maximum funding band by the Institute for Apprenticeships. These are the caps for TESS Group's AI programmes. The actual invoice, where one exists, is paid by the levy or co-investment, not by the learner.

The funding flow in plain English

The UK apprenticeship system splits cost between employers, government, and (not) the learner. Here is the breakdown for each type of employer.

Levy payers · GBP 3m+ pay bill

100% covered by your levy pot

If your business pays into the Apprenticeship Levy (0.5% of pay bill above GBP 3 million), the training cost for every AI apprenticeship is drawn monthly from your Department for Education Digital Account. There is no invoice to your finance team.

  • Full funding band covered by levy
  • No co-investment or top-up required
  • Monthly drawdown, 12 to 36 months depending on programme
  • Unspent levy expires after 24 months
SMEs & non-levy payers

5% employer, 95% government

For employers below the levy threshold, the government co-invests 95% of the training cost. Your 5% share of an GBP 18,000 Level 4 programme is GBP 900, payable to TESS Group in instalments.

  • 5% employer contribution (GBP 900 on a GBP 18k programme)
  • 95% government co-investment
  • 0% for priority groups (under 22s, care leavers, some disability categories)
  • No VAT on apprenticeship training

No hidden fees. No added VAT.

The funding band is the whole cost. Everything an apprentice needs to complete and pass is already included.

AI apprenticeship cost FAQ

How much does an AI apprenticeship cost in the UK?
The funding band for a UK AI apprenticeship typically sits between GBP 15,000 and GBP 27,000 depending on level. The Level 4 AI and Automation Practitioner sits at GBP 18,000. For a levy-paying employer the full amount is drawn from their Apprenticeship Levy pot. Small businesses that do not pay the levy contribute 5 percent of the cost, with the government funding the remaining 95 percent. The apprentice themselves pays nothing.
Who pays for an AI apprenticeship?
For levy-paying employers, the cost is drawn from the levy pot that sits in their Digital Account with the Department for Education. For smaller, non-levy-paying employers, the employer pays 5 percent and the government co-invests 95 percent. Apprentices under 22 and other priority groups can qualify for full government funding.
What is the DfE Growth and Skills Levy?
The Growth and Skills Levy is the UK Government scheme that replaced the old Apprenticeship Levy in April 2026. UK employers with a pay bill above GBP 3 million pay 0.5 percent of their annual pay bill into the levy. Funds are held in their Department for Education Digital Account and must be spent on approved apprenticeship training within 24 months, or they expire to the Treasury.
Does the apprentice pay anything?
No. UK apprentices do not pay tuition fees. The training cost is covered either by the employer's levy pot or by government co-investment. The apprentice earns a salary throughout and works at least 30 hours per week, with around 20 percent of their time spent on off-the-job learning.
What is included in the price?
At TESS Group, the funding band covers every element of the programme: Ofsted Good delivery by industry-leading trainers, up to 5 qualifications per programme, Microsoft AI certification pathways where relevant, a dedicated tutor and coach, all learning materials, End Point Assessment, and progression guidance. There are no additional fees.
How long before funding hits the provider?
Monthly. The Department for Education transfers the monthly instalment from the employer's levy pot to the training provider for the duration of the apprenticeship, usually 12 to 24 months depending on level. A 20 percent completion payment is released on successful End Point Assessment.
Can we use our levy for existing staff?
Yes. Existing employees can be enrolled onto an apprenticeship provided the programme represents substantial new learning. Most AI apprenticeships are taken by existing staff upskilling into AI-adjacent roles, and this is the fastest way for a levy-paying employer to convert levy spend into workforce capability.
What happens if we do not spend our levy?
Unspent levy expires 24 months after it enters the employer's Digital Account and returns to the Treasury. On average, levy payers lose between 30 and 40 percent of their annual levy this way. Planning a rolling AI apprenticeship cohort is the most effective route to drawing down the full balance.
