What is the AI and Automation Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship?

The AI and Automation Practitioner is Skills England apprenticeship standard ST1512, a Level 4 programme for people who apply AI and automation inside a business role rather than build models. Apprentices learn to identify processes, design and build AI-assisted workflows and agents, govern their use responsibly, and measure the result. It is written for non-technical roles across HR, finance, operations, marketing, sales and leadership. No coding is required. TESS delivers it live online with up to five embedded qualifications. Standard: Skills England ST1512; programme: TESS Level 4 AI and Automation.

How long does the AI and Automation Level 4 apprenticeship take?

15 months on the standard open route: 12 months of live online delivery (one module a month, with protected learning time agreed with the employer) followed by a 3-month end-point assessment window. Skills England lists a typical duration of about 18 months; TESS front-loads delivery so apprentices reach gateway at month 12. A private 8-month accelerated closed cohort is available for employer teams, with the same standard, funding band and assessment.

How much does an AI apprenticeship cost an employer?

The funding band for ST1512 is £18,000, the maximum the government will fund for the whole 15-month programme. Levy-paying employers (annual pay bill over £3 million) draw it from their levy account at no cash cost. Non-levy employers pay 5% co-investment for apprentices aged 25 and over (about £900) and nothing for apprentices aged 16 to 24. Levy payers whose account is exhausted co-invest 25% for apprentices aged 25 and over from 1 August 2026. Figures checked against the apprenticeship funding rules; see who pays what, by start date.

Can I use the apprenticeship levy to fund AI training for my staff?

Yes. Any apprenticeship standard on the Skills England list is eligible, and ST1512 (AI and Automation Practitioner Level 4), the three Level 5 AI Leadership apprenticeship units (AU0009, AU0010, AU0011) and the Level 6 Machine Learning Engineer (ST1398) are all approved. The levy cannot be spent on short courses, licences or non-apprenticeship training, which is why many employers run AI upskilling as an apprenticeship: the same budget that would otherwise expire funds 15 months of structured, assessed training for existing staff.

Can existing employees do an AI apprenticeship, or is it only for new hires?

Existing employees can. There is no age limit and no requirement to be a new hire; an apprentice needs a contract of employment, a role where the new skills will be used, and the apprenticeship must be substantially new learning for them. Roughly 80% of TESS AI apprentices are existing staff being upskilled. A prior degree does not block eligibility provided the content is new. Source: apprenticeship funding rules.

What is the Growth and Skills Levy, and how is it different from the Apprenticeship Levy?

The Growth and Skills Levy is the renamed and reformed Apprenticeship Levy. The 0.5% charge on pay bills over £3 million is unchanged. What changed in 2026: funds paid in from 1 August 2026 expire after 12 months instead of 24 (balances held on 31 July 2026 keep 24 months); the 10% government top-up was removed; exhausted-levy employers co-invest 25% for apprentices aged 25 and over; Level 7 funding ended for most new starts over 21 from 1 January 2026; and 16 standards were defunded from September 2026. Non-levy employers still pay 5% (25 and over) or nothing (16 to 24). Source: DfE Growth and Skills Levy guidance; TESS summary: everything changing in 2026.

Which Level 3 apprenticeships are being defunded in 2026?

Sixteen standards lost funding for new starts from September 2026, including Team Leader or Supervisor Level 3 and Operations or Departmental Manager Level 5. Apprentices already enrolled complete as normal. Employers who used those standards for first-line and middle managers are generally moving to the Level 3 Data-Driven Team Leader or to the AI and Automation Level 4 with a leadership track (AI for Team Leaders, AI for Operations Leaders), which remain fully funded.
