Same Skills England standard (ST1512, AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4). Same 15 months. Same levy funding. Same 4.9/5 from 689+ verified reviews. The difference: every module is taught through Microsoft Copilot and the Microsoft ecosystem your team already uses.

Embedded certification: Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730) (AB-730). Free as part of the apprenticeship. Apprentices complete the cert during the programme — no extra cost, no extra exam fees.

Why Microsoft Copilot specifically?

  • Your organisation already runs on Microsoft 365. Adopting Copilot extends what your team already knows rather than introducing a parallel toolset.
  • Microsoft AB-730 is the most widely-recognised AI-business credential in UK employer contexts. Apprentices leave with a recognisable name on their CV.
  • Copilot Studio plus Power Automate is currently the strongest no-code automation toolkit available — no other vendor has matched this ecosystem.
  • Microsoft's Purview governance and compliance layer makes Copilot the safer choice for regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, government).

The Microsoft stack covered

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams
  • Copilot Studio — Build custom AI agents with low-code
  • Power Automate — Process automation across Microsoft + 1,500 connectors
  • Power BI — AI-driven data visualisation and reporting
  • Power Apps — Custom AI-powered business applications
  • Microsoft Fabric — Unified analytics + AI platform for enterprise data

Six concrete things apprentices ship during the programme

  • Document and email automation. Copilot in Word, Outlook, and Teams handles drafting, summarising, and formatting at scale. Apprentices learn the prompting patterns that turn a 30-minute draft into a 2-minute review.
  • Excel as a data engine. Copilot for Excel transforms Excel into an analyst-tier tool. Forecasting, scenario modelling, and reconciliation work that used to need a data analyst now happens in-cell.
  • Custom Copilot agents in Copilot Studio. Apprentices design, test, and deploy domain-specific Copilot agents — for HR queries, finance approvals, IT service desk, customer FAQs.
  • Power Automate flows for repeatable work. Replace manual approval chains, multi-system data entry, and inbox triage with low-code automation flows.
  • Compliance and AI governance. Microsoft Purview integration, sensitivity labels, and the AI-001 / AI-900 governance frameworks. Embedded into the apprenticeship through the BCS AI & Data Ethics module.
  • Power BI insight delivery. AI-driven Power BI dashboards that summarise themselves in plain English. Apprentices ship at least one production Power BI report during the programme.

Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini?

Both are the same Level 4 ST1512 apprenticeship; the difference is which tool stack apprentices are immersed in. Most TESS clients pick the version that matches the productivity stack their workforce already uses — minimising context-switching cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a different apprenticeship to the standard AI & Automation Level 4?

No. It's the same Skills England standard (ST1512, AI & Automation Practitioner Level 4) — the same 15-month programme, the same end-point assessment, the same levy funding. The difference is curriculum focus: this version teaches every module through the Microsoft Copilot stack rather than mixing tools.

Can apprentices switch between Copilot and Gemini cohorts?

Yes — both are ST1512. Some employers run mixed cohorts (different learners, same standard). We default to grouping by primary toolset for a tighter cohort experience.

Does this include the Microsoft AB-730 certification?

Yes — Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730) is embedded in the programme at no additional cost. Apprentices sit the exam during the programme.

How much Microsoft licensing do we need to provide?

Apprentices need access to Copilot for Microsoft 365 (which most employers already license for their workforce). For the Copilot Studio modules, a Copilot Studio licence is helpful but not strictly required — TESS provides sandbox access for the duration of the programme.

How does this compare to a Microsoft Copilot short course?

A short course covers feature awareness in 1-2 days. This is a 15-month structured apprenticeship with a portfolio of real workplace projects, end-point assessment, and recognised qualifications. Levy-funded means £0 net cost for levy-paying employers.

Is the 8-month accelerated track available for the Copilot version?

Yes — the same 8-month fast-track variant is available, taught entirely through the Microsoft stack. See our 8-month accelerated AI & Automation page.

What's the distinction rate?

59% of TESS apprentices on AI standards achieve a Distinction grade vs ~20% national average. Distinction rate is the single best provider-quality signal.

Can our HR / Finance / Operations team take this if they don't code?

Yes — that's specifically who the programme is built for. ST1512 is a non-coding standard. Copilot is a no-code interface; Power Automate is low-code. The most successful apprentices are non-technical professionals applying AI to their own daily work.
